Godspell is a musical, composed by Stephen Schwartz with the spoken parts by John-Michael Tebelak. It opened off Broadway on May 17, 1971, and has played in various touring companies and revivals many times since, including a 2012 Broadway revival.
The musical is a series of parables, mostly based on the Gospel of Matthew set to fun upbeat musical numbers and a fantastic telling of Christ's journey with his disciples.
